Clinical Engineering

Clinical Engineering is the safe and efficient management of technologies and applications of medical and biological engineering in the clinical environment, to promote and develop healthcare.

The clinical engineer is a professional who supports and promotes the patients' care through the application of technological and management know-how to health care.

The innovative side of this emerging professional profile is in the ability to conjugate high-level technical-specialist know-how with healthcare know-how, so obtaining a highly necessary contribute to current needs for collaboration with health operators to find a solution to clinical and management problems in social and health services (both within hospital services and within distributed home-care structures).

SSIC-HECE: a new proposal for the new, enlarged Europe

Several years ago, the interest and the need for some new international curricular programs, starting from SSIC, has been clearly shown by many European transition Countries, as well as by Italy itself to prepare clinical engineering specialists able to implement and work on integrated health systems in the new, enlarged Europe.

The reform of the university studies in Italy and in Europe (both in the EU and in the other European countries) according to the Bologna Declaration has therefore stimulated the transformation of the Specialization School of Clinical Engineering in a new set of curricula called "Higher Education in Clinical Engineering" (HECE), or, in Italian language "Studi Superiori in Ingegneria Clinica" (SSIC again)

SSIC-HECE: MIC and SMMCE - two serial masters. The flexibility of the new educational offer.

Within SSIC-HECE two serial masters of one year each have been activated, each with a curriculum of 60 ECTS (European credits).
The first one, called Master of "Clinical Engineering" (MIC) will give a professional education, while the second one, called International "Specialist Master of Management in Clinical Engineering" (SMMCE) will give a managerial-organizational education.

Programmes

Clinical Engineering (MIC - MCE) - 1st level Master

Campus/Location: Trieste
Language: Italian
Admission: enrollment possible only after having achieved the Bachelor's Degree

Duration: 1 year

MIC - MCE is an innovative course, aiming at the formation of professional specialists in the field of Clinical Engineering, able to work in the Clinical Engineering Departments, coordinating small operational units of technical staff, with the aim to: manage, evaluate, install, maintain and upgrade the clinical-assistential biomedical and info-telematic instrumentation and equipment, used in social-health services (either inside hospitals or in distributed care and home care structures)  take care of the safe, appropriate and economic use of the above mentioned technologies  collaborate with health operators in the use of engineering methodologies to find solutions to clinical and management problems.

MIC - MCE is a 1st level University Master, with the duration of one Academic Year, giving the right to acquisition of 60 ECTS valid also for the Specialist Laurea Degree in Clinical Engineering of the University of Trieste.

The Master course originates from a close collaboration between the Department of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Trieste and many other scientific institutions, hospitals, industries, and public and private administrations, already agreed or cooperating with the Post-graduate Specialization School of Clinical Engineering

Who may apply for MIC

The Master MIC is open to people with any degree of 5 years in Engineering or with a 3-years degree in Information Engineering (e.g. Biomedical, Electronic, Informatic, Automatic Eng.), or Industrial Engineering (e.g. Chemical, Material, Mechanical Eng.), either pre or post Bologna revision. Three-years diplomas in other engineering branches or in physics or in computer science may be also evaluated for admission to the entrance exams, according to the owned credits.
